Howard Frumkin, a physician and epidemiologist, wears two hats. At the Trust for Public Land, he is Senior Vice President, leading TPL’s Land and People Lab in assembling evidence, and driving evidence into policy and practice, on TPL’s strategic commitments: health, equity, climate action, and community. At the University of Washington, where he was Dean of Public Health from 2010-2016, he is Professor Emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. Previously he was head of the Our Planet, Our Health initiative at the Wellcome Trust in London, Director of the National Center for Environmental Health at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Professor and Chair of Environmental and Occupational Health at Emory University. His career has focused on health aspects of planetary changes including climate change, the built environment, nature contact, energy policy, and sustainability. He is author or co-author of over 300 scientific journal articles and chapters, and his ten books include Environmental Health: From Global to Local (3rd Edition, 2016), Planetary Health: Protecting Nature to Protect Ourselves (2020), Planetary Health: Safeguarding Human Health and the Environment in the Anthropocene (2021), and Making Healthy Places: Designing and Building for Health, Well-Being, and Sustainability (2nd Edition, 2022). He was educated at Brown (A.B.), the University of Pennsylvania (M.D.), and Harvard (M.P.H. and Dr.P.H.). He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
